Outcome of the Visit to the Russian Federation by Irina Bokova, Director-General of UNESCO

The Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, made a visit to Russia on September 6-9, during which she took part in the Global Policy Forum in Yaroslavl.

In the setting of the Forum, the UNESCO Director-General was received by President Dmitry Medvedev of Russia. They discussed topical issues in cooperation between Russia and this largest international humanitarian organization of the UN system.

At the Forum Bokova presented two reports: “Cultural Diversity: Building Bridges to Lasting Peace” and “Supporting Cultural Diversity in a Globalized World.” The Director-General and persons accompanying her visited the historical center of Yaroslavl, inscribed on UNESCO’s World Cultural Heritage List since 2005.

In Moscow Bokova presented UNESCO medals “For contributions to the development of nanoscience and nanotechnologies” to a group of Russian and US scientists, spoke to the International Scientific Conference on “Humanist Foundations and Social Functions of Art,” organized at the Russian Academy of Arts, delivered a lecture for faculty and students at Lomonosov Moscow State University, visited one of Moscow’s gymnasiums which are part of the network of UNESCO Associated Schools, had a look at the final stage of UNESCO-supported Bolshoi Theater reconstruction, met with leading Russian journalists at the ITAR-TASS news agency, and gave an interview to the television channel “Russia Today” and TV program “Obvious, But Incredible.”

During Bokova’s visit to Lomonosov University, a ceremony awarding her an Honorary Professorship of the University took place.

The visit of Irina Bokova to the Russian Federation, her second since her election as Director-General of UNESCO in October 2009, has contributed significantly to the further development of Russia's cooperation with UNESCO.
