Yaroslavl Demidov State University is one of the largest innovation and educational centers in Russia. Over 7,000 young people study here in 50 fields annually. The University has strong academic programs in more than 10 areas of study.

Leading positions traditionally hold departments of history, law and social and politics studies were significant success in a research of nationhood problems and political regimes within a breakdown into different historical epochs is achieved. Since 1994 a subdivision of UNESCO subdepartment on human rights and democracy of Moscow State Institute of International Relations functions in the University.

Yaroslavl State University is a member of International Association of Universities (IAU), and actively participates in international exchange and academic cooperation programs. It supports and develops relations of partnership with the universities of Poitiers and Sorbonne in France, Stanford, Vermont, Susquehanna and Nebraska in the USA, Jyvaskylan in Finnland. In 1999 the Yaroslavl University and the Institute of International Studies of the University of Stanford gave a start to a distance learning program for students and young scientists. Currently over 250 Yaroslavl participants of the project hold certificates of Stanford University. Regional 'Cisco Systems' academy, which prepares professionals in the sphere of network technologies, has been operating in the University since 2006. In 2007 it was named the best in the CIS in four nominations out of nine.

Yaroslavl State University was a third higher educational institution in Russia to get a degree certificate according to the European foundation for quality management (EFQM) model: Committed to Excellence. In 2005 the University initiated a project on fundamental reengineering of the educational process quality management. The aim was to maximize the University's orientation on the needs of its 'customers' - students and their potential employers. In 2007 the University successfully passed the external assessment of its quality management system by the EFQM.

Yaroslavl State University is considered to be founded in 1803 when a philanthropist Pavel Demidov financed the creation of Yaroslavl College of Advanced Sciences (later Demidov Law Liceum).
